Soon after establishing White Rock we built a health clinic located on the northeast corner of the farm. The DOUBLE HARVEST Clinic was built in honor of Aart and Cora van Wingerden by their children. A dedication service was held on March 4, 1988 and the clinic has seen and helped thousands of people since.
In Thomazeau we built a spacious school building to replace the dilapidated one; the school is staffed and operated by Baptist Haiti Mission. November 1, 1989 was the inauguration of the Cora Van Wingerden Baptist School of Thomazeau.
DOUBLE HARVEST established a primary school in 1996 at its base of operations in White Rock. David Marshall, veteran overseas missionary and retired president of Evangelical Baptist Mission, joined DOUBLE HARVEST to guide the medical, academic and spiritual ministries of our project. The Aart VanWingerden School has since grown to over 460 students (2010), offering education to students from Pre-School to Grade 13. Students are sponsored by interested donors in America. If you would like information on sponsorship, go to the Sponsor a Child section.
As is the tradition on all DOUBLE HARVEST projects we begin each work day with morning devotions. These are led by Christian employees, the missionary-in-residence and local pastors.
“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3
A similar devotional time is held for patients in the waiting area of the medical/surgical clinic. Christian films such as the Jesus Film are shown along with videos/DVDs on hygiene and personal health care. Prayer occurs with individual patients facing difficult diagnoses and surgeries.
“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5: 31
In addition to the standard curriculum for primary and secondary education we teach our students a Christ-centered view of life, fostering obedience to God as the Sovereign Creator and source of all truth and knowledge.
“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2: 3
On the campus of the Aart van Wingerden School – Haiti DOUBLE HARVEST built a building for Eglise Baptiste Evangelique Church. Since then, the church has outgrown the facility and moved to the larger School Cafeteria. Under the leadership of Pastor Garry August, a young Haitian pastor, the church has grown and flourished. Sunday worship services and Sunday School classes are conducted and various ministries have been organized. Evangelistic outreach to the neighboring villages through presenting the Jesus Film and conducting youth and children’s programs are sponsored by the church.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some.” Hebrews 10: 24, 25
The church, with support from DOUBLE HARVEST, hosts annual Pastor’s Conferences attracting over 100 pastors. The local pastors - many ministering in lonely, difficult places - are encouraged through Bible teaching sessions, workshops on ministry leadership and times of fellowship.
“And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” II Timothy 2: 2
Vacation Bible School programs are held each summer. Church teams from the United States come to provide this great ministry for children. Our VBS programs accommodate over 300 children and, without fail, the visiting church teams receive the greater blessing.
“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19: 14
Youth Camp for teens is an annual summer event. A camp facility is rented near the ocean providing a great setting for around 200 teens to enjoy recreation, competition, food, Bible study and teaching, and …little sleep! Each camper receives a camp T-shirt, devotional booklet, French Bible, note pad and pen. We operate Youth Camps to teach teens the relevancy of Christianity to their lives and the rewards of applying godly principles to their relationships and daily walk of faith.
“Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth,” Ecclesiastes 12: 1
For a number of years we have been conducting English Camp at the school facility during the summer recess. This is an opportunity for interested Haitians to learn and practice their English skills and become more proficient with a second language. We use this time of interaction to tell the good news of the gospel, to make the Bible stories come alive and talk about a new life through faith in Jesus Christ.
“Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.” Psalms 19: 2,3
