Haiti Update - April 2018

by Vernon Giesbrecht

Mobile Medical Rural Clinics– WORMS?! Aren’t they those wriggly, squishy things – invertebrates – we find in our gardens? Yes! But, medically, the word is also used to refer to intestinal parasites, devastating worms from which children and adults are suffering in developing countries like Haiti. Worms hijack their nutrition, weaken their muscles, keep sick children from school, and essentially drain people’s lives. They invade a body through bare feet, or contaminated food or water. Without a change in hygiene, sanitation and medicine, these parasites can take an irreparable toll on a child’s body. However, one dose of special medication kills the worms!

As an outreach of our Double Harvest Clinic, The Chapel-Sandusky, OH Medical Mission Team gave out de-worming pills to over 1,330 people in four villages and our students and workers at Double Harvest during their one-week medical mission in April. These villages had never hosted a medical team. Through translators, nurses took vitals on children and adults, doctors conducted further assessments and wrote scripts, and patients received their medications from the pharmacists, as well as the de-worming pill and fungal cream. Each person was prayed over and given a gospel pamphlet, a toothbrush and tooth paste. At one village a high percentage of Typhoid Fever was discovered due to their water source (of great concern!), and at another village church, people living on the “mountain” walked down 2 hours to be seen, with a 3 hour return trek awaiting them. Packages of dry fortified meals were also given to these families. (See March, 2018 Update) Severe cases were referred to our Clinic. It was our privilege to guide this team. We thank the church and the team for their skills, resources, and compassionate care they offered to these needy people as a service to Christ.

Education…Sponsorship– We all would agree that children are the future of a nation. However, if health, education and spiritual needs are in short supply for this demographic, the future of a country can look bleak. Unfortunately, this is the situation in Haiti, but our school has become a model in fighting these trends. (See August, 2017 Update) Coming from over 30 nearby villages, our Pre-K –Grade 13 students receive a state-recognized education, Bible classes, a daily nutritious meal, and medical care when needed from our Clinic. We thank our dedicated Haitian faculty for their commitment to these students. Also, our gratitude goes out to our faithful Sponsors who offer these children and youth hope for the future. For $45/month you can change the life of a child in Haiti! Please contact us for more information about Sponsorship. (Click here) We thank you as well for your support of the ministry of Double Harvest! You are helping us in “Sowing Seeds of Life” in difficult places in this world.
