Haiti Update - February 2017

by Vernon Giesbrecht

The "Power of ONE". You’ve probably heard the phrase before. It often refers to the strategy in accomplishing a large vision or objective. A formidable task is reduced into manageable proportions. A number of years ago World Vision, the large international Christian humanitarian and relief organization, published a poster with a child’s face. At the top was the question: "How do you reach three million children?" At the bottom was the answer: "ONE child at a time!"

The "power of ONE" has been at work at our mission in Haiti. The 480 students at our School, Pre-School – Grade 13, are receiving an excellent education ONE student at a time, including a Bible curriculum, dedicated Haitian teachers, a nutritious meal each day, and free medical care. However, 22 years ago it began with only ONE class. Sponsors for these students (now at $45/mo.) have increased over time – ONE at a time. At our Medical-Surgical Clinic, 100 people with a variety of third-world health concerns are seen every day – ONE at a time. A recent Medical Team conducting rural clinics served over 1400 people, ONE at a time! A Surgery Team, on-site as I write, reports they will perform 100 surgeries in a week, including saving a little boy’s life by repairing a double hernia. ONE patient at a time! Health related, drinkable water from our wells continues to be pumped to seven villages – 420,000gal/week – over one million gal/year…ONE gallon at a time!! The number of patients at our Clinic suffering with water-borne illnesses has been cut in half!!

At the heart of our 200 acre project are the Farm, Fish and Chicken/Egg projects. The major grains - corn, sorghum, soybeans, as well as vegetables are planted – ONE seed at a time. Using our wells and employing best practices, drip irrigation lines are painstakingly laid out – ONE line at a time. With capacity to grow one million tree seedlings, we are helping to meet Haiti’s desperate reforestation needs – ONE tree at a time. Our Chicken Project produces 2,700 Grade A eggs per day, providing numerous vendors the opportunity to make a living – ONE egg at a time. Our Tilapia Fish Project provides this nutritious food item into the Haitian market and other fisheries– ONE fish and fingerling at a time. With the threat of rodents, rain, and hurricanes, when a new, well-built, concrete block home is constructed for a needy family (now at $8000), it becomes a reality ONE block at a time. One can see the anxiety on the faces of this ONE family melt away as the keys are handed over! Your faithful contributions make this all happen – ONE donation at a time!

Above all, people’s hearts are being changed by the love of Christ and the hope of the gospel. It seems the Lord uses hardship, amplified here in this impoverished country, to soften people’s hearts – ONE person at a time! The "Power of ONE"!
