Haiti Update - February 2019

by Pastor Chris Hinckley

My name is Chris Hinckley and my wife Carol and I are the new North American Coordinators of Double Harvest. We are thankful for the opportunity to serve alongside you in meeting the urgent spiritual and physical needs of the Haitian people. We are humbled that the Double Harvest board of directors have entrusted us with this stewardship. Finally, we are grateful for the support and encouragement of Vern and Jayne Giesbrecht who have faithfully served the mission in Haiti for the past 11+ years. We pray the Lord will bless the next chapter of their lives and service to Him.

We recently returned from a trip to Double Harvest with Vern and Jayne in order to announce our transition in person. We had a wonderful time meeting with board members as well as the staff at the school, the church, the farm and medical clinic. It is always a special joy to visit the children at the school. While at Double Harvest, we visited a local village where the Springfield medical team was serving the community. It was encouraging to see the team in action and especially how each care provider prayed with the patients during their appointments. We also had the opportunity to visit two start up schools outside the Double Harvest property. Just seeing the amazing ministry taking place at Double Harvest makes us thankful to God for partners like you. You are truly laying up treasure in heaven by investing in the lives and souls of the Haitian people. The Apostle Paul's words come to mind, "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now". - Philippians 1:3-5

Our trip concluded with a visit to the mass burial site near Port-au-Prince. It was a sober reminder of the massive loss of life and widespread suffering caused by the 2010 earthquake. Many of the people in Haiti still live with the daily reminder of that fateful Tuesday in January 2010. While at the site, we prayed that the Haitian people would put their hope in Jesus.

Since returning to the states, Haiti has been experiencing civil unrest. At the time of this writing, most of the country is seeing some relief after 13 days of rioting and violence. For the past two weeks schools, businesses, banks and roads were shut down. Gas is in short supply. The situation is desperate and the people are fearful. Yet, in the midst of the chaos, God was blessing the efforts of the Tri-state medical team and Dr. Peter Pierrot at Double Harvest. Together, they performed over 55 surgeries, delivered a baby and took care of the patients who couldn’t return home.  At the conclusion of their trip, Tri-State was escorted to the airport by SWAT and police. Praise God for their safety. Please continue to pray for Double Harvest and the country of Haiti.  Pray specifically that it would be safe enough for our mission teams to continue ministering at Double Harvest. The need is great but our God is even greater.

Thank you for your support.
