Haiti Update - July 2017

by Vernon Giesbrecht

Mission Team Partnerships – We’ve experienced God’s blessings as we’ve pursued our mission on our 200 acre property in Haiti. (Please see our Mission Statement and other Updates) With blessing comes responsibility. So, we are privileged to serve as a base for partnerships with mission teams and mission organizations – working together for the gospel. Our Medical Clinic’s upper level allows for safe, clean accommodations, providing an opportunity for food preparation, a hot shower, and a good night’s rest. From this “oasis” teams either serve on our property or reach out to the needy villages in our area. In this Update we highlight two of these groups

Eye Care Ministry – The organization “Living In Faith” (LIF) works in Haiti and in Cuba, providing high quality eye care and safe drinking water. Through a partnership agreement with Double Harvest, LIF rents an area of our Clinic facility as an Eye Care Clinic. With few protective glasses against the high ultraviolet rays of the tropical sun, plus unsanitary conditions, eye infections, glaucoma, and cataracts are common. LIF has trained a team of Haitians to conduct exams/refractions, prescribe medications, and take biometrics for upcoming surgeries, usually evaluating up to 250 people per month. Only prescriptive eye glasses are provided (no recycled glasses; they deserve the best!), with patients charged a small amount for accountability, unless there is a desperate need.   Eye Surgery Teams – Five times a year, these medical professionals use our operating rooms to conduct cataract surgeries, and a few times even corneal transplants. Typically, 50-60 procedures are done in a four day period. From seeing only hand movement to almost perfect vision, a patient can resume a normal life, freeing up their care giver and perhaps going back to work. Even children, like 2 ½ year old Abigael, who had bilateral cataract surgery, is now active as a two year old should be! A recent video (“Eye Care Clinic – One Surgeon’s Report”) of one of the visiting ophthalmologists is available by clicking the video link and it gives you a sense of what the Eye Care Clinic is accomplishing for the Haitian people.

"A Greater Tomorrow" – This organization’s vision is to show the love of God to the people of Haiti. From Springfield, TN, it has fielded teams over the past few years with the goal of helping remote churches and orphanages with construction and spiritual ministry. In July, a team of around 24 ventured to poor villages 30-60 minutes from Double Harvest, focusing on three ministries – (1) Constructing a roof for a church, and a porch and storage room for an orphanage they had previously built; (2) Conducting two Vacation Bible Schools with a village church and the orphanage, seeing a number of children coming to faith in Jesus; (3) Distributing 1,000 lbs. of clothes and shoes, 150 soccer balls, and 100 lbs. of school supplies. One of the highlights was purchasing and installing a generator to operate the pump for a previously dug well at the orphanage. What a celebration occurred as clean water gushed up for the first time from an unbelievable 480 ft. depth!! These partnerships help them and us accomplish our missions – “Sowing Seeds of Life”!
